About the Doctors

Dr. Levi received his DMD from the Tufts School of Dental Medicine in 1966. He received his Specialty training in Periodontics from Tufts in 1971. After graduating, he opened his private practice limited to periodontics — Associates in Periodontics.

Dr. Shuman graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1982 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Periodontology in 1985 before joining Associates in Periodontics.

Dr. Halliday is a graduate of the University of Windsor in Ontario. She completed her Dental and Periodontal training at the Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry in 2002 and 2007, respectively. Dr. Halliday joined Associates in Periodontics in October of 2007.

Dr. Kolesar received his dental degree from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in 2003. He completed his specialty training from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s School of Periodontology in 2006. He joined Associates in Periodontics in March 2008.

Paul A. Levi, Jr., DMD

Dr. Paul A. Levi, Jr. graduated from Tufts School of Dental Medicine in 1966 and completed a one-year internship at the Mary Fletcher Hospital in South Burlington, Vermont. Following that, he entered the U.S. Navy for two years and worked in a clinical dental research clinic and as the Periodontal Officer for the Naval Recruits. He received his Certificate in Periodontology from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1971, and began a private periodontal practice, and teaching at the University of Vermont in Dental Hygiene and in the General Practice Residency Program at Fletcher Allen Hospital (formerly Mary Fletcher Hospital). He has also taught at Harvard School of Dental Medicine as a consultant and teacher at the Veterans Administration Hospital, White River Junction, Vermont. He taught at Harvard School of Dental Medicine for nine years until 2001, and acted as assistant director of the postdoctoral program in periodontology for five years. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in 1975. He worked extensively as a volunteer for the Vermont State Dental Society since 1971 and has been a member of or chaired several committees. He was on the Executive Board of the Vermont State Dental Society for three years and Treasurer for four years. He has served on many committees for the American Academy of Periodontology and worked as a host or moderator at the Annual Meeting for continuing education courses. He was a Trustee of District One for two terms (six years), and served as a member or chaired several ad hoc Board committees. In addition, he has attended many hours of continuing education courses yearly, as well as attending several of the International Academy of Periodontal Research meetings.

Dr. Levi has lectured to lay groups, general dentists and specialists in the United States, Europe and Asia and conducts a weeklong course in Khon Kaen, Thailand every year. For the past six years he has been on the Board of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, and presently is the president of the Foundation. In addition he is a board examiner for the American Board of Periodontology. He presently teaches two to three days a week at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and lectures at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He practices periodontics in South Burlington, Vermont two days a week.

Brian D.Shuman, DMD

Dr. Shuman graduated in 1978 from Haverford College where he was a biology major, participated in varsity soccer, baseball and tennis and was awarded the College Varsity Cup as a senior. He was also a member of the 1978 U.S Maccabiah Olympic Soccer team.

He graduated the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1982 and completed his periodontal training at The University of Pennsylvania School of Periodontology in 1985, where he was class president. He joined Paul Levi, Jr., DMD in 1985.

Outside of dentistry, Dr. Shuman enjoys golf, tennis and spending time with his daughters.

Holly A. Halliday, DDS

Upon graduation from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry in 2002, Dr. Halliday practiced general dentistry in Michigan and Ontario for two years. In 2007, she graduated as chief resident from the University of Detroit Mercy Periodontics Program and was published in the journal General Dentistry the same year. Dr. Halliday is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Matthew R. Kolesar, DMD, MMSc

Dr. Kolesar graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s School of Periodontology. Dr. Kolesar, a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, most recently practiced in Washington, D.C. He is a contributing author to the Illustrated Handbook of Clinical Dentistry, was a clinical instructor of head and neck anatomy at Harvard Medical School, and has been published in the Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Implants .
